Medina Baumgart, PsyD, ABPP

I’m a licensed psychologist in California and a board-certified specialist in Police and Public Safety Psychology through the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). I work full-time as an embedded psychologist within a law enforcement agency where I provide counseling, critical incident debriefings, crisis response and critical incident rollouts, training, consultation to peer support and chaplains programs, and consultation and support to patrol stations and jail facilities. Outside of my full-time job, I enjoy teaching and providing consultation to law enforcement agencies and personnel about a range of topics such as officer resilience, retirement, peer support, critical incidents, post-traumatic stress, and suicide. I’m also married to a now-retired police officer and know firsthand some of the challenges that officers and spouses experience throughout a law enforcement career and into retirement.

My Book

Cops face a unique set of challenges when it comes to successfully adapting to (and thriving in) retirement. My husband and I both learned this lesson the hard way when he retired after his 29-year career. Through that experience, we learned that our struggles were not unique and that so many law enforcement retirees and spouses were dealing with similar issues, often with little to no guidance or support. It was important to me to share what we learned so that others don't have to struggle in silence. From the initial stages of preparing for retirement to the lifelong process of finding purpose and fulfillment, Surviving Retirement: Finding Purpose and Fulfillment Beyond the Badge offers real-life insights and practical tools to help officers and spouses make a successful transition and create a meaningful life beyond the badge.

This show is about honest conversations — with active and retired officers, spouses and loved ones, and the clinicians, chaplains, and peers who walk beside them. No matter what role you play in this first responder space, we all carry something and none of us are meant to carry it alone.

This is not therapy. It’s not polished. And it’s definitely not sugar-coated. Just real people showing up with their stories. Give it a listen.
